Levels of Care

Throughout the Odyssey Outpatient Network, our programs offer a range of intensity, including partial hospitalization treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, and virtual intensive outpatient treatment, that helps support each client’s unique clinical needs on their road to recovery. We work with each client to find the best fit (location and level of care) within our programs. Whether a client is transitioning to outpatient treatment from a residential treatment program, or they need more support than individual therapy can provide, we can help. The right outpatient program depends on many factors, including the client’s diagnosis, their previous treatment experience, and the time they can dedicate to recovery.
Additionally, our outpatient clinical teams foster collaboration with community providers as we serve as an extension of each client’s treatment team. The two-way communication ensures clients receive seamless continuity of care as they transition into and out of our programs.

IOP or PHP?: What Do I Need to Understand When Seeking Treatment?

Traditional talk therapy is what most people consider when they think of therapy. Talk therapy has proven to be highly effective, it is versatile and can effectively address a wide range of issues. Even so, weekly talk therapy isn’t always the right tool for the job. Sometimes, it isn’t enough. Sometimes, it’s too much. Fortunately, it’s not the only option. If you need help with your mental health, there is an entire spectrum of care available.

Throughout the Odyssey Outpatient Network, our programs offer a range of intensity, including partial hospitalization treatment (PHP), intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), day virtual intensive outpatient treatment (V-IOP), and evening virtual intensive outpatient (V-IOP) that helps support each client’s unique clinical needs on their road to recovery. But what exactly does this mean?

A Glimpse into Our Programming

We offer the following levels of care at our facilities. Since the levels of care vary by facility, you can visit our Locations page for facility-specific programmatic details.
Partial hospitalization programming or PHP or day treatment is one of the highest levels of care you can get outside of a hospital or residential treatment and is the most comprehensive outpatient program we offer. This level of support is ideal for individuals who may need that added measure of structure, similar to what you would receive at a residential treatment facility while allowing you to live at home. In PHP, clients attend programming five days a week, for six hours each day, similar to attending school or a job. The programming consists of group-based therapy, individual and family therapy as clinically indicated, and psychiatric services including medication management if needed. Our Eating Disorder PHP services also include medical supervision and nutritional counseling. PHP treatment programs are often used as step-down care from residential programming, or care that helps you readjust to life after inpatient treatment.
Intensive outpatient treatment programming or IOP is a higher level of care than weekly talk therapy, but a less intensive level of care than inpatient treatment or partial hospitalization programs. This level of care focuses on group therapy, which is held two to three times each week. This programming also incorporates individual and family therapy when clinically indicated. Because they provide so much structure and support while you’re still dealing with everyday life, IOPs are great at helping you learn how to cope with day-to-day stressors and triggers while allowing you to live at home.

Virtual intensive outpatient treatment or V-IOP is a similar structure to traditional outpatient, as mentioned earlier. Virtual programming has proven to be just as effective as in-person treatment and is ideal for those that are working, in school, or unable to travel or attend treatment during the day. For client’s unable to attend day treatment, an evening V-IOP is a great option as well. While not as widely available, evening treatment addresses a prevalent need by providing easily accessible alternative to care.
